What the FONK (Fear of Not Knowing) is Blocking your Wellness Book Writing Success?

Is FONK (Fear of Not Knowing) Blocking your Wellness Book Writing Success?

You’ve probably heard of FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out. That’s when you have anxiety because you think you’re missing out on something.

Recently I came across the phrase FONK, or Fear of Not Knowing.

FONK results in the mistaken belief that if we only KNEW a little more, we’d DO a lot more. It leads to:

  • The futile search for more important knowledge
  • The passive taking in of knowledge instead of more active goal-oriented steps
  • “Busy-ness”instead of business-growth-oriented action

Is your book writing blocked by FONK?

If you’ve thought about writing a book for years, but never got started, chances are it is.

So let’s unpack what these fears might be.

  1. Imposter syndrome: Who am I to write a book?

Are you afraid you don’t know enough about your subject matter? Even though you have degrees or certifications in your specialty, maybe even advanced degrees, you may still harbor the belief that other people “know more than you”, and you’re not really qualified to write a book.

FONK antidote: If you’ve been practicing in your health specialty for even a few months, you have enough knowledge and experience to write a book on one specific subject, possibly more. And if you’ve been practicing for years, chances are you have enough knowledge to write several books.

You’re not lacking subject matter knowledge. You’re missing information on how to focus your book.

You need guidance or coaching to help you pinpoint the best way to direct your knowledge into a book that helps you build authority.

  1. Fear of writing and publishing your book.

Are you afraid you won’t be able to write the book, or get it finished? Are you stuck because you don’t know the next steps, such as how to get a publisher or how to self-publish?

Those are legitimate fears. Writing and publishing a book can be a daunting task when you’ve never done it before. It can feel like climbing a mountain.

FONK antidote: Get the education you need, but don’t stop there.

Get guidance, in the form of a coach or mentor who can help you navigate all the twists and turns in the road to a book.

The biggest risk is NOT writing your book.

It’s always scary to take a big step, such as writing a book, because there is risk involved. What if you’re book doesn’t turn out the way you envisioned it? What if no one buys it? Worse yet, what if you get bad reviews on Amazon?

Yes, all these things can happen, but….

What about all the people you could have helped….who never read about your unique solution to their problems?

What about all the business opportunities you may lose by not writing your book – opportunities such as being invited to speak at conferences or events, the possibility of helping people worldwide, and leaving your legacy?

It’s not lack of knowledge. On Amazon, you can find 79, 968 results for information on writing and publishing.

That alone can put you into a FONK – fear of not knowing which books to read, or which advice to follow.

“It’s an illusion that knowledge is power. Knowledge is potential power.”  – Tony Robbins

You will never feel ready…until you have the guidance you need.

Don’t let FONK sabotage your book. You are not alone in your FONK. That’s why I want to help.

Step 1 is knowing what to do. It’s like learning the basics of a language.

Step 2 is putting the knowledge into action. That’s like fluency, or using the language to communicate well.
