The 3-Legged Stool the Wellness Gurus Use to Build Empires

Dr. Mark Hyman. J.J. Virgin, Hailey Pomroy. Dr. Sarah Gottfried. Dr. Michael Breus, David Wolfe. Dr. Daniel Amen. Jorge Cruise.

You see them on morning talk shows, on the Dr. Oz show, and in the news. They speak at high level conferences and on-line summits, and are quoted in the media.

They are the recognized health professionals that people turn to as resources. Have you ever wondered, “Why them and not me? What do they have that makes them the center of attention, when I have just as much expertise?”

The answer is: a book. They are all published authors. In fact, many of them are authors of several books. By becoming authors, they became elevated to the level of a sought-after speaker and media guest. In fact, here’s a quote on Dr. Hyman’s website, from a former president:

“I hope Dr. Hyman’s new book will inspire you as it has inspired me.”- President Bill Clinton

That’s a powerful endorsement! But is it the whole story to these wellness celebrities’ successes?

If you look at any of their websites, you’ll see how they built their media empires. I call this system the three-legged stool, which consists of:

  1. A book to educate, and build the “know, like and trust” factor. Their book is at the lowest price point, making it accessible to a wide audience.
  2. On-line courses or DVD programs at a more substantial price. Other higher-income sources include speaking engagements and consulting.
  3. Supplements, products and continuity products that generate recurring income.

Lets follow the path to success. These gurus are well-known, and attract the media so people buy their books in droves. What happens next? Their readers go to the gurus’ websites, and buy their DVDs or online programs, or join their on-line coaching groups for more guidance. Then they need the guru’s custom-designed supplements to support their new weight-loss or healing goals.

The on-line courses range from $50 to $300 and more. And to accompany each course, the sets of supplements can cost $200 or more for a month’s supply. With many people reordering for $200 a month, you can do the math.

In a sense, the wellness gurus’ books are almost loss leaders. Once readers dip their toes into the water with this $10 or $15 purchase, they feel confident about investing in the gurus’ programs and products.

Just think about how many weight-loss programs are for sale. You hear about them constantly in the news and in advertisements. Yet when someone is looking for a way to shed a few pounds, and they’ve just read Dr. Mark Hyman’s Blood Sugar Solution, or J.J. Virgin’s The Virgin Diet, it’s a no-brainer for them to choose that guru’s program over one from an unknown doctor or nutritionist.

And it makes perfect sense to buy J.J. Virgin’s Chocolate All-in-One Shake, or Dr. Hyman’s complete kit of supplements to follow his 21 day plan, over an unknown store brand.

But it’s the books that are the cornerstones to the wellness gurus’ empires.

Did you notice that Bill Clinton didn’t say, “I hope Dr. Hyman’s new training program will inspire you,” or, “I hope Dr. Hyman’s new line of supplements will inspire you,” although Dr. Hyman has those as well?

No, it’s Dr. Hyman’s book that excited Bill Clinton.

If you’re thinking of writing a wellness book, now is the time to start benefiting from the most time-proven way to build your practice─becoming an author.

For just a few dollars, anyone in the world can find out about what you do. A portion of those readers will buy your training program, join your coaching sessions, purchase your supplements, or participate in anything else you offer that brings them value.

You’ll also feel the surge of pride in making your wisdom available to a wide audience, and leaving your legacy for generations to come.

Writing a book is the single most important thing you can do to establish your authority and build your wellness business.
